Ford Muscle Cars Legacy
When it comes to muscle cars, plenty of folks automatically think that Ford was always in the running, however this isn't exactly as true as Ford fans would like it to be.
Although the Ford Mustang was easily outselling the competitions sports cars in the mid-1960's, it became clear that Ford was missing out in the Main Street style of stoplight street racing.
It wasn't until the late 60's that Ford Muscle cars made their true debut with some Mustangs getting new 428 Cobra Jet V-8 engines. From there the surge in Ford Muscle cars was a force to be reckoned with. Take the Fairlane Cobra, that came standard with that same 428 Cobra Jet V-8 engine as its Mustang cousin.
This was a true muscle car thanks to the power it harnessed combined with its mid-sized model, as well as being very affordable, which is part of the definition of what is considered to be a Muscle Car.
Surprisingly, in 1970 the Ford Maverick came on very strong and was almost seen as a Mustang replacement. Just look at the number of sales in the first twelve months for both cars to see the tale.
The Ford Mustang sold 619,000 cars in its first 12 months of sales back in 1964. The Ford Maverick on the other hand closely rivaled that number by having a production number of nearly 579,000 cars in its first 12 month period.
Another of the Ford Muscle cars that can not be forgotten is the Ford Torino. Originally, the Torino was an upscale version of the Fairlane, however, in time the Fairlane was dropped and all models, low-end or upscale were Torinos.
This car became one of the best muscle cars when Ford decided to give it the powerful 429 Cobra Jet V-8 like it did for the Fairlane Cobra and the Mustangs. With this powerhouse giving it the muscle, along with its mid-size made this car a force to be reckoned with on the streets.
With Ford enjoying the success of its racing on the official Nascar and Indy tracks, and the amazing and record setting success of the Ford Mustang, it is no wonder that Ford came late to the Muscle Car scene.
They may have been late, but they most definitely made up for lost time, especially in 1969 and 1970 when several Mustang models as well as a redesigned Torino and the Fairlane Cobra were brought into the mix to answer their competition.
To top it off, the Ford Mustang has been the only true muscle car that has survived and continues the legacy that once was the Ford Muscle cars.
